UNICORN: Ultimate Sea Views Winner!

U N I C O R N

I'm pleased to share that my photo of Godrevy Lighthouse was awarded "Coastal Views" category winner of the Shipwrecked Mariners Society's annual Ultimate Sea Views photographic competition 2022. This is quite possibly my most notable photographic achievement to date.

The competition was judged at Trinity House by a prestigious panel of photography experts, with online picture editor at The Telegraph, Neil Stevenson, former Sunday Times picture editor, Ray Wells and picture editor of the i, Sophie Batterbury joining Chief Executive of the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, Capt. Justin Osmond RN.

Changing things up seemed to have worked for me! Usually, I plan trips to Godrevy Lighthouse at high tide - when waves are crashing through the rocky gullies. But on this occasion, I decided to visit at low tide and position myself down in the gullies to find views looking through them towards the lighthouse. I settled on this composition with towering rocks framing the scene. As the sun rose into a gloomy sky, a rainbow appeared! A real "Unicorn Shot." I snapped a few hundred frames and blended a few of my favourites to create this picture.

The overall prize over four categories was awarded to Justin Minns for a drone shot of ‘The Old Oyster Beds’ in Brightlingsea, Essex.

Prints of my winning photo are now available to buy through my website. It also features in my 2023 CORNWALL CALENDAR, alongside 11 other Cornish scenes.
